On July 28th 2011, I held a charity event in my practice.
For 5 hours staright we examined nearly 20 chidren under the age of 12, provided cleanings and flouride treatments.
The day went well, thanks to my staff volunteering their time, Patterson Dental Supply Company donating berrry flavored floss and Redmond Reporter for publishing an article about the event one week ahead to put the word out in the community.
It was an eye opening experience. What I had anticipated, and what I found in my examinations of the children’s teeth were totally opposite!
Traditioanlly decay tends to be more agressive and frequent in low socioeconomic populations. Of the 20 pediatric exams yesterday, where majority did fall into the population category mentioned previously, I found only one child with cavities!
Coincidence? Perhaps…but what does this really mean? I believe it has a lot to do with flouride pumped in our drinking city water and a general increase in dental hygiene awareness and IQ thanks to TV, Radio and magazine advertisements from crest, colgate and such.
Where does it leave the profession of dentistry?
Less decay, means less restorative, less resconstructive surgeries and generally less drilling and less dentistry as we know it! This will truely change the dental industry forever and shift our thinking to research and tooth regeneration beyond primary and adult sets of teeth. Fascinating…

Brushing teeth can prevent lung cancer! Read on…

Two minutes in the morning and two minutes in the evening and your lungs may be breathing fine for a very long time. We’re talking about brushing your teeth.

As you’ve no doubt heard, good dental hygiene helps prevent gum disease. But what you might not know? A recent study suggests that gum disease may open the door to some pretty serious lung diseases.

The Mouth-Lung Connection
Smoking remains the leading cause of serious respiratory diseases, such as lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The recent study did not conclusively prove that gum disease is another direct cause of COPD. But people in the study who were hospitalized with COPD and other types of lung disease had significantly higher rates of gingivitis and periodontal disease than the folks in a control group who had healthy lungs. It’s not clear what the connection is. But we know that the bacteria from dental plaque, when inhaled into the lungs, not only can cause COPD exacerbations but also might trigger respiratory infections in healthy people. A Double Threat
For good gum — and lung — health, brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes. Even better, brush after every meal if you can. And floss daily. The key is to keep dental plaque — that sticky, bacteria-filled film that forms on teeth — from building up and causing gingivitis and periodontal disease. Research shows that spending at least two minutes brushing each cleaning session is ideal for removing plaque. (While you’re at it, try eating this kind of fat for a healthier smile.)

Are dental x-rays harful?

There is a big difference between the amount of radiation a patient is exposed to when taking digital versus conventional x-rays.
Conventional x-rays are achieved by using a film, and exposing a high amount of radiation to the patient and the film. Harmful chemicals are then used to develop the x-ray for the clinician. This is also a time-consuming process as the patient waits for the x-rays to develop.
A digital x-ray is achieved by placing a sensor, instead of film, and exposing the patient to approximately 90% less radiation than conventional film as the sensor requires a much reduced level of radiation for exposure.
This process is quick as it does not require developing and the image appears immediately on the computer screen, thus eliminating the use of harful chemicals, and is also of a much higher diagnostic value to the clinician.
Dental digital x-rays are very safe to take every 6 months and are exteremly important in diagnosing dental decay is areas not visible during a visual clinical exam.
